Methodos eV is a learning community based in Freiburg , the aim of which is to prepare for the Abitur without school or attendance.

history

Methodos emerged in 2007 from a high school initiative at a Waldorf school in Freiburg . The prospective high school graduates were bothered by the increased test pressure in the upper level from the school, but could not reach an agreement with the school. When two popular teachers left school, they founded the Methodos association. At the beginning they were confronted with criticism from the Baden-Württemberg Ministry of Culture and the Association of Philologists . In 2014, 17 students were already studying together for the Abitur. In 2020 there were 15 students between the ages of 17 and 20.

financing

It is financed through donations, including from the Kant Foundation , and personal contributions (often from parents). This primarily covers (tutoring) teachers and the room rental. They get significantly less money than salaried teachers. There are currently 11 (private tuition) teachers employed.

Goals and way of working

Methodos is organized on a grassroots basis , despite the official board of the association . However, neither teachers nor parents have the right to vote.

Typically, students leave school after eleventh grade and prepare for high school at Methodos in a year or two. Methodos high school graduates manage themselves and study together or alone. However, if necessary, they also hire different teachers for the different subjects, who should specifically support the students. Mostly these are retired teachers who previously taught in state schools and therefore have experience with the Abitur exams.

Methodos has a permanent place of learning in the Haus der Jugend , where the members meet regularly for (joint) learning. As external high school graduates, the members prepare for four written and eight oral exams.

The association is a member of the umbrella organization for democratic schools in Europe, the European Democratic Education Community (EUDEC), and meets the criteria of the EUDEC for a democratic school .

literature

In 2012 the book Revolution im Klassenzimmer - When students start their own school - The Methodos principle by the former student Alia Ciobanu was published by Herder-Verlag.
