In chemistry, methylbenzyl alcohols form a group of substances that are derived from both benzyl alcohol and toluene . The structure consists of a benzene ring with attached hydroxymethyl (-CH 2 OH) and methyl groups (-CH 3 ) as substituents . Their different arrangement results in three constitutional isomers with the empirical formula C 8 H 10 O. Similar to the methylbenzaldehydes ( tolualdehydes ) and methylbenzoic acids ( toluic acids ), similar common names such as tolyl alcohol , toluyl alcohol , tolyl carbinol and tolyl carbinol are occasionally used.
