The M2 line with the characteristic color red is the second oldest line of Metró in the Hungarian capital Budapest . Based on the Soviet model, it was built so deep that the route and the stations can serve as a bunker in the event of war. The M2 was planned as early as 1942, but planning was halted in the years 1954–1963. Only then did the construction of the line begin. In 1970 a first part between Örs vezér tere and Deák Ferenc tér was released. Two years later, the remaining part up to the south station was completed.
Today the M2 connects the south station in Buda with the Örs vezér tere in Pest with a journey time of 18 to 19 minutes. It is 10.3 kilometers long and serves eleven stations. The line passes Népstadion , Ostbahnhof , Deák Ferenc tér, Parliament and Batthyány tér. The stations were renewed between 2004 and 2008 and the rails were changed in 2010 so that new Alstom vehicles could be used. The line crosses all three of Budapest's other metro lines, the M1 and M3 at the largest metro station at Déák Ferenc tér and the M4 line at the Ostbahnhof. There are also connections to the suburban railway HÉV , at the Batthyány tér station to Szentendre and at the Örs vezér tere station to Gödöllő or Csömör .
