history
Whitefield was organized on June 19, 1809 as the 177th Town in the Province of Maine . It grew out of the western half of an area that had previously been organized as the Ballstown Plantation . The eastern half became Jefferson Town. The land was owned by the Kennebec Purchase Company, a Boston company that engaged in land speculation. Settlement of the area began around 1760. Some settlers acquired grants from the company, many others settled without legitimate proof of ownership. They only became owners in 1815 after the ownership structure had been clarified.
The first settlements arose on the Sheepscot River at the sites of the first mills. A sawmill was built in Kings Mills, now Great Falls, in 1774. Another was built at Clary Lake. A mill complex was built here around 1791. Another was Coopers Mills. Quarries were also built. Limestone and granite were quarried, used to build houses and sold on.
