The Dnipro Metro ( Ukrainian Дніпровський метрополітен Dniprovskyj metropoliten ) opened in 1995. This makes Dnipro one of the youngest underground cities in Europe . Passenger numbers have been falling continuously since the metro went into operation. In 1996, 18.2 million passengers were carried, in 2013 it was only 7.5 million.

history

In the mid-1970s, Dnipro exceeded the population of one million, which, as is common in the Eastern Bloc, justified the construction of a subway. Construction began in 1982, but especially after the collapse of the Soviet Union, construction progressed only moderately for economic reasons. On December 29, 1995, the metro between Komunariwska (Комунарівська) and Woksalna (Вокзальна) opened with six stations. This made Dnipro the third Ukrainian city to receive a metro, after Kiev and Kharkiv . The stations all look very similar, only the ceiling paneling is different. All stations except Komunariwska are (based on the Soviet model) at depths of 40 to 60 meters. The trains run from 5:30 a.m. to 11:30 p.m. every 7 to 17 minutes, with a 5-minute cycle planned for the future. The vehicles, consisting of three cars per train, use the 825 volt power rail normally used on subways to draw power . You are driving on the Russian broad gauge of 1524 millimeters.

Future prospects

Further stations are planned in the future. The Zentralna (Центральна) station should be completed by 2017 , and the Komunariwska – Zentralna line would then be 11.8 kilometers long. The Teatralna intermediate station (Театральна) should then also go into operation. These stations are now expected to go into operation by 2019. Another station called Piwdennyj / Jushnyj Woksal is due to be completed in 2019 . Corresponding contracts were signed between the infrastructure minister Boris Kolesnikow and the chairman of the oblast administration. An extension to the west around a station called Parus (Парус) is planned for later.

The Zentralna train station is to be designed as a transfer station as soon as it is built, as the medium to long-term plan is to build another line that will open up the other side of the Dnipro . This is to cross the existing route at the station mentioned. In the very distant future, it can be expected that the Dnipro metro lines, like other former Soviet metro systems, will form a secant network.

The metro was supposed to be expanded by the Japanese construction company Sumitomo Shōji for the European Football Championship in 2012 , but was not implemented.
