The Metropolitan Detention Center in Sunset Park , Brooklyn , New York City , is an American federal prison .

Capacity and history

The federal prison was built for 1,000 prisoners. It houses female and male prisoners.

It was built for inmates awaiting trial in federal courts for the Eastern District of New York . These include: Brooklyn, Queens , Staten Island, and Long Island . It started operating in the early 1990s. There were local protests because they feared that the prison operations would overload the infrastructure.

In 1999 the building was expanded. The prison currently holds 1,510 prisoners (as of July 16, 2020).
