The metropolitan area of ​​Cairo , also Greater Cairo , ( Arabic القاهرة الكبرى, DMG al-Qāhira al-Kubrā ) is the largest metropolitan region in Egypt , the largest urban region in Africa and the Arab world and is the 13th largest metropolitan region in the world. It consists of all cities in the al-Qahira governorate as well as Giza , Madinat al-Sheikh Zayed and Madinat al-Sadis min Uktubar in the al-Jiza governorate and Shubra al-Khaimah and al-Ubur in the al-Qalyubiyya governorate . For 2020, the population is estimated at 19.3 million inhabitants on an area of ​​2,020 km². Other estimates assume a population of over 20 million. The population density per square kilometer is just under 9,600 and is one of the highest in the world. In some parts of the metropolitan region it is even over 300,000 per square kilometer.

The metropolitan region of Cairo is by far the most important economic center in Egypt and generates a significant part of the national production. At the same time, it suffers from extremely high population pressures, widespread poverty in informal settlements and air pollution. To get these problems under control, the city continues to expand into the surrounding desert, where new suburbs are emerging.
