history

Wall mosaic in the metro station

The station opened on September 6, 1973, making it one of the six stations on the original subway line.

During the construction of the Pyongyang Metro, there was an accident in 1971 when digging a tunnel under the Taedong Gang to the Ponghwa station, in which at least a hundred construction workers are said to have died. The tunnel was not completed after that, which is why the metro only runs in western Pyongyang today.

Art and propaganda

In the marble- clad train station there is propaganda art in the form of a wall mosaic. This shows President Kim Il-sung with people from different generations.
