Virgin MiamiCentral is a new train station in the city of Miami , which is located directly adjacent to the business center in Downtown Miami . There are direct crossings from the new train station to the existing Government Center Station complex of the Metrorail Elevated Railway , the Metromover Peoplemover, and the bus lines that connect there.

The station is laid out on several floors with elevated platforms. A distribution level leads from the ground floor with shops to the platforms on the second floor. The Brightline express trains from Virgin Trains USA , which owns the station, will operate the station from May 2018. Separate platforms have been built for Tri-Rail's regional trains , but the feeder tracks are still under construction. It is not known whether Amtrak will offer passenger service.

The new train station complex in downtown Miami should not be confused with the Miami Airport Station, which is also sometimes called Miami Central . In the plans of the 2000s, all long-distance and regional trains to Miami should end there, and the city center should be accessible via Metrorail. However, due to a series of problems at the airport station, only the Metrorail and the Tri-Rail were connected.

The station was only briefly called MiamiCentral until the rebranding in April 2019 by Brightline on Virgin Trains USA .

MiamiCentral was originally established as the southern terminus of the Florida East Coast Railway (FEC). The opening took place on April 15, 1896 and in 1912 a wooden station building was added. From 1925, the Miami-Dade County Courthouse , the city's historic courthouse, was built on the site of the old station building . The directly adjacent new station was served by the Seaboard Air Line Railroad (SAL) from 1927 . Both FEC and SAL then used the station until 1963.

On January 23, 1963, the unions of both companies started a strike, as a result of which traffic came to a standstill. The city of Miami wanted to get rid of the tracks in the city center anyway, and train traffic was never resumed. Instead, the old station was demolished in November 1963. In keeping with the car-friendly city, a large parking lot was created in front of the city's administrative complex.

Originally, a new station was to be built a little further north at the Buena Vista freight yard, but these plans never materialized. Instead, the railway lines had to end in the Allapattah district . With the takeover of rail traffic by Amtrak, the long-distance connections were finally withdrawn in 1978 to the station in the suburb of Hialeah . On March 6, 1989, a separate “Tri-Rail & Metrorail Transfer” station was set up there.

In March 2012, All Aboard Florida announced the construction of a high-speed line. In May 2014 they announced they would build an area in downtown Miami, which roughly corresponds to the parking lot on which the old train station once stood. The parking lot was closed in August 2014 and the first concrete pillars were erected on it in March 2015.

A central platform 20 meters above street level is to be used for high-speed traffic. In the further planning, three tracks are to be used by the FEC, and two tracks next to them for the regional traffic of Tri-Rail. The ground floor and other buildings will contain shops, offices and a hotel.

For the “Tri-Rail Downtown Miami Link”, the regional train company is also contributing 70 million dollars to the construction of the station. However, the commissioning of the connection was postponed to 2019. This is because Tri-Rail will thread into the tracks of the FEC in front of the new station. The installation of a PTC system is necessary for this. In spring 2018, the application, which has to be submitted by the FEC, had not yet been submitted to the railway authority, and the authority can take up to 180 days for the first answer. This means that Tri-Rail test runs in the new station would not be possible until the end of 2018 at the earliest. The Brightline trains themselves, on the other hand, do not need a removed apron to connect their platform.
