Michèle Tabarot (born October 16, 1962 in Alicante , Spain ) is a French politician of the UMP . She has been a member of the National Assembly as a member of the Alpes-Maritimes département since 2002 and was Secretary General of the UMP from November 2012 to June 2014 as successor to Jean-François Copé , until she was replaced in this position by Luc Chatel .

Tabarot is the daughter of the Algerian- French Robert Tabarot, who was a successful boxing champion and one of the leaders of the OAS in Oran , which fought with violence against the independence of Algeria from French colonial rule. After independence, the family first settled in French-speaking Spain , where Michèle Tabarot was born, and moved to France in 1969 after the former OAS activists had been pardoned. Among her ancestors, however, is also the great-uncle Pierre Tabarot, who co-founded the socialist newspaper L'Oran républicain .

Tabarot was a member of the liberal and pro-European party Parti républicain or, since 1997, of its successor organization Démocratie libérale . In 2002 this merged into the center-right party alliance UMP, to which it has belonged ever since. From 1983 to 1985 she worked as an adjointe to the mayor of Le Cannet , Pierre Bachelet, who belonged to the Gaullist RPR . In 1995 she finally competed against the incumbent and won the election. Since then, she has ruled the city near the Côte d'Azur , which is a stronghold of the conservatives. She was also a member of the regional conseil for the Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur region from 1998–99 and 2004–05 .
