Michael A. Clemens
Michael Andrew Clemens is an American economist at the Center for Global Development (CGD), where he leads the Migration and Development Initiative. He is also a Research Fellow at the Institute for the Future of Work and a partner at the Financial Access Initiative research center .
Life
Clemens studied engineering ( B.Sc. , 1994) at the California Institute of Technology , and economics and environmental management at Johns Hopkins University ( MA , 1997). 1996–1997 he worked as a consultant for the Environmental Defense Fund , and 1998–1999 for the World Bank . In 2002 he received his Ph.D. from Harvard University . From 2002 to 2010 he taught at the Georgetown Public Policy Institute at Georgetown University . He has been researching at the CGD since 2002, and in a leading position since 2011.

Clemens' research areas are economic growth and development, migration research , economic history and international finance . He has published in renowned journals such as The Economic Journal , Journal of Economic Perspectives, and the Journal of Economic Growth .
One of his most cited works is a 2011 article in the Journal of Economic Perspectives entitled Economics and Emigration: Trillion-Dollar Bills on the Sidewalk . In it he explores the question of why economists spend a lot of time examining the flows of goods and capital but neglecting the migration of workers. He drafts a four-point plan for researching the effects of migration.
He has also written articles for magazines such as the Boston Review , The Huffington Post , Foreign Policy and Foreign Affairs .
