Environmental Defense Fund
Environmental Defense Fund , or EDF for short , formerly Environmental Defense (German: Umweltverteidigungsfonds), is a US non-governmental organization with environmental protection goals.
The organization, based in New York City, works on issues of global warming , ecosystem preservation, the oceans and human health. It often supports market-oriented solutions to environmental problems or uses communication campaigns to introduce or influence bills.
The organization was founded in 1967 by Art Cooley and others after they discovered the extinction of peregrine falcons and other birds of prey in the mid-1960s and were able to establish a connection with the use of the insecticide DDT in their research .

- 1970 - Whales added to the US Red List of Endangered Species
- 1972 - US DDT ban
- 1974 - Based on Mississippi studies, the USA's first national drinking water protection law is passed
- 1985 - Unleaded petrol introduced, lead poisoning in children decreased
- 1987 - participated in the ban ozone layer -zerstörender CFCs
- 2000–2004 - Partnerships with FedEx and other corporations to reduce greenhouse gases
The organization has regional offices in Austin, Texas , Oakland, California , Washington, DC , Raleigh, North Carolina, and Boston, Massachusetts.
In 2006, Environmental Defense launched a campaign against the Texan energy producer TXU . After the expected takeover by the private equity companies Kohlberg Kravis Roberts and Texas Pacific Group for US $ 45 billion, they decided to reduce the construction of coal-fired power plants by TXU. In order to implement an environmental regulation, they involved environmental defense.
