Michael Alfred Gotthelf (* 1953 in Frankfurt am Main ) is a German entrepreneur and publicist. He was one of the initiators of the Ludwig Börne Prize for Literature and the founder of the Walther Rathenau Institute , a foundation for international politics that awards the Walther Rathenau Prize.

Life

Michael A. Gotthelf was born the son of a Berlin Jew and a Bavarian Catholic.

In 1972 Gotthelf completed his Abitur at the Goethe Gymnasium (Frankfurt am Main) . He then began studying sociology, political science and business and economics at Stanford University California and Johann Wolfgang Goethe University Frankfurt . There he obtained his doctorate in 1979. rer. pole. in economics. As an economist, he took part in the edition suhrkamp “The future of capitalism” with the contribution “What are you all staring at 1929 ?!”.

He began his professional career as an editor for the Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung (FAZ) in Frankfurt. Michael A. Gotthelf then worked as a bank manager. At the beginning of the 1990s he headed Metallbank, a subsidiary of Metallgesellschaft . In 1995 he founded the later Hypovereinsbank (Switzerland) for the Munich parent company , which focused on business with institutional customers and took over its management as managing director and - renamed AP Anlage & Privatbank AG after a management buy-out in 1999 - he acted as president of the Board of Directors until the bank is acquired by the Latvian Parex Bank.

Michael A. Gotthelf was Honorary Consul of the Czech Republic in Frankfurt for two years from 1992 . From 2000 to 2004 he was the German honorary consul in Zurich. He then moved to London. Gotthelf has also been an adviser to international institutions for a number of years; He advised the President of Madagascar on a pro bono basis.

Foundations

As chairman of the Ludwig Börne Foundation, based in Frankfurt am Main, Gotthelf was one of the initiators of the Ludwig Börne Prize , a literary prize for essays, criticism and reports, founded in 1993 .

At the beginning of 2008 he founded the Walther Rathenau Institute, a foundation for international politics based in Berlin, where he is chairman of the advisory board. The institute promotes political education in the spirit of foreign policy maker Walther Rathenau and awards the Walter Rathenau Prize every year. The award stands for human rights and tolerance.

Together with Günther Nonnenmacher (FAZ co-editor), Mathias Döpfner (CEO of Axel Springer SE ) and Martin Meyer (feature editor of the Neue Zürcher Zeitung) Gotthelf founded the Frank Schirrmacher Foundation. The aim of the foundation is to maintain and pass on the work and values ​​of the FAZ co-editor Frank Schirrmacher, who died in June 2014 . The foundation annually awards the Frank Schirrmacher Prize for “outstanding achievements in understanding our current affairs”.
