Michael Abraham Behrens

Michael Abraham Behrens (born 1812; died 1879) was a German entrepreneur, the first Jewish local politician in the history of the city of Hanover and vice - head of the Jewish community in Hanover .

Life

Born at the time of the Kingdom of Westphalia during the so-called " French era " shortly before the elevation of the former Electorate of Hanover to the Kingdom of Hanover , Michael Abraham Behrens ran a business in fur in Bäckerstrasse in Calenberger Neustadt , which merged with the city of Hanover in 1824.

In 1859, Behrens was elected to the Hanover Citizens' Board (BVK) as the city's first Jewish personality . Previously, Behrens had - necessarily - acquired the citizenship of the city by paying the citizens' profit money .

For a time, Behrens held the office of vice-head of the Jewish community in the previous building of the New Synagogue on Bergstrasse .

As late as 1868, the address book of the royal residence city of Hanover recorded Behrens as vice- spokesman for the BVK. Thus he was in direct local political contact with his colleague Daniel Heinemann .
