Michael Ahern (politician)

Michael Ahern ( Irish Mícheál Ó hEachthairn , born January 20, 1949 in Dungourney , County Cork ) is an Irish politician ( Fianna Fáil ) and was a member of the Dáil Éireann , the lower house of the Irish Parliament , from 1982 to 2011 .

Ahern was born in January 1949 as the son of the future Senator and MP Liam Ahern . His great uncle was the Irish politician John Dinneen . He attended Rockwell College in Cashel , County Tipperary , and University College Dublin , where he later received a Bachelor of Arts in Economics, Politics and Psychology. He then studied in Kimmage Manor, Dublin theology . From 1970 to 1972 he worked as a secondary school teacher and then from 1973 to 1977 he was an accountancy student at Coopers / Lybrand in Cork . In 1977 he became Financial Controller in a construction company in Cork. In 1981 Ahern changed careers and became Principal of Registered Audit and Accountancy Practice, which he remained until 2000.

His political career began in 1982 when Ahern was first elected for the Fianna Fáil in the constituency of Cork East in the Dáil Éireann. In total he was re-elected seven times and was Minister of State three times during his time as a member of Parliament , during the 26th, 29th and 30th Dáil. In the elections for the 31st Dáil Éireann Ahern could not defend his seat and lost it to Sandra McLellan of the Sinn Féin .

Ahern is married and has three daughters.
