Michael Bishop, Baron Glendonbrook

Michael David Bishop, Baron Glendonbrook CBE (born February 10, 1942 in Bowdon (Greater Manchester) ) is a British businessman and life peer . He became known as the owner of British Midland Airways and sold his shares to Lufthansa in 2009 . Glendonbrook has an estimated net worth of £ 280 million. He was one of the first senior managers in the UK to openly acknowledge their homosexuality.

Youth and education

Michael Bishop is the son of a factory manager. He first encountered flying when he was six when his parents took him on an Aer Lingus flight to Dublin to buy chocolate, a rarity in post-war Britain.

He went to Mill Hill School in North London, he loved flying, so he took on a number of summer jobs involving aerial photography.

British Midland

In 1963, Bishop began working at Manchester Airport in the ground handling of Mercury Airlines, a scheduled and charter airline that was acquired by British Midland in 1964. Bishop worked at British Midland and rose to General Manager in 1969 and Managing Director in 1972.

In 1978 the London investment company Minster Assets, which owned British Midland, decided to sell its shares. With the help of a California dentist, Bishop raised £ 2.5 million on a management buy-out and was subsequently named a director. On 1 February 2011, Bishop as Baron Glendonbrook , of Bowdon in the County of Cheshire, the Life Peer collected, and sat between March 22 for the Conservatives in the House of Lords .

Personal

Bishop is openly gay and has been speaking publicly about LGBT rights since 2008. Bishop is often described in the press as elegant . He's been a member of the Conservative Party since he was 17; He is Chairman of the Board of Trustees of D'Oyly Carte Opera Company , which performs and sponsors operas by Gilbert and Sullivan .
