from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Michael Brüggemann (* 1583 in Stolp in Western Pomerania ; † September 7, 1654 Schmolsin ), also known under the name Pontanus , was a German Lutheran theologian .

Life

From 1610 to 1654 Brüggemann was pastor in Schmolsin bei Stolp and court preacher to Duchess Anna von Croy (1590–1660). He mastered the Kashubian language and translated the catechism of Martin Luther and other theological works and non-fiction books into Kashubian.

The Duchess once let him paint in secret, against his will, from an adjoining room in which an artist was hiding. The life-size picture showing him with gray hair and a long beard hung for many years in the Schmolsiner village church , today in the Middle Pomeranian Museum in Stolp .
