Michael Burdekin

Frederick Michael Burdekin (born February 5, 1938 in Hawarden , North Wales ) is a British civil engineer (steel construction).

Burdekin attended King's School in Chester and studied engineering at Cambridge University with a degree in 1959. He then worked in industry for fifteen years. From 1977 until his retirement in 2002 he was Professor of Structural Analysis and Civil Engineering at the University of Manchester Institute of Science and Technology (UMIST), which later became the University of Manchester .

He was particularly concerned with welding and was a director of The Welding Institute (TWI). He researched the propagation of cracks in metals, their early detection with non-destructive methods, their control and tests and assessment methods for crack formation, especially in welded steel structures. This was incorporated into British standard 6493.

In 1997 he received the gold medal from the Institution of Structural Engineers . He is a Fellow of the Royal Society and the Royal Academy of Engineering .

In 2008 he became OBE for contributions to the safety of nuclear power plants.

He has headed Macclesfield Cricket Club since 1996 and is on the board of his old school in Chester.
