Michael Anthony Cronin (born October 1, 1960 ) is an Irish translation scholar and professor at Dublin City University . He is the editor of the New Perspectives in Translation Studies (Routledge) series.

Career and research focus

Michael Cronin studied French at Trinity College Dublin and later earned a Master of Arts in the same subject from University College Dublin. He wrote his doctoral thesis at Trinity College Dublin on the question of the extent to which bilingualism hinders or promotes creativity in writing. Using the example of Québec , he was able to show that the coexistence of English and French gave the authors resident there additional impulses.

In translation studies, he argued, not least against the background of Irish as a threatened language , for the value of translations as a means of cultural and linguistic respect in intercultural exchange. At the Center for Translation and Textual Studies at Dublin City University he was involved in setting up '' TRASNA '' . The online database, in which a bibliography of international translations of Irish literature is collected, is intended to be used to analyze the global position of Irish literature.

Cronin's other research focus is machine translation . Based on the importance of tools for the development of culture and society, Cronin argues that processes of globalization are driven by translation. In Translation in the Digital Age (Routledge, London 2013), he therefore advocates the development of a controlled language to achieve better results in automatic translation processes.
