Michail Damaskinos or Michael Damaskenos ( Greek Μιχαήλ Δαμασκηνός ; * 1530 ; † 1593 ) was an important Greek icon painter .

Life

Damaskinos was born in the Cretan city of Chania in 1530. In Crete he learned the art of icon painting. He later went to Italy , where he first studied and also copied the works of Italian painters. From 1569 to 1573 he lived and worked in Messina . From 1574 he lived in Venice as a member of the Greek community . During this time he was commissioned to paint the icons of the Church of San Giorgio dei Greci , which he completed in 1582. He returned to Heraklion shortly before his death . Around 90 of his works from the years 1555 to 1591 have been preserved.

Artistic importance

Damaskenos was the most famous Cretan painter of the second half of the 16th century. He was a contemporary of Domenikos Theotokopoulos . Damaskinos and Georgios Klontzas are considered to be the most important representatives of the creative rebirth of Cretan icon painting . Damaskinos combined Italian mannerism with Cretan icon painting. Damaskino's works, like those of Andreas Ritzos , became models for subsequent generations of icon painters.
