Michael Derus

Michael Derus is a German diplomat . He has been Ambassador to Madagascar since August 2019 .

career

Michael Derus joined the Foreign Service in 1988 after completing his law degree and legal clerkship with the 2nd state examination in law.

In addition to various missions abroad at the embassies in Brazil , Mozambique and Serbia , he also worked for the Permanent Representation of the Federal Republic of Germany to the North Atlantic Treaty Organization ( NATO ) and the Permanent Representation of the Federal Republic of Germany to the European Union .

In the Federal Foreign Office he was deputy head of the division for nuclear disarmament, arms control and non-proliferation and from 2010 to 2013 head of the division for international treaties.

From 2013 to 2015 Derus headed the Consulate General in Lagos , Nigeria, and in this position was also responsible for maintaining economic relations with 17 of the 36 Nigerian states. From 2015, until his appointment as Ambassador to Madagascar in August 2019, Derus was Deputy Ambassador and Head of the Economic Department at the German Embassy in Nairobi , Kenya .
