Michael Franz Xaver Gnant (born June 7, 1964 in Vienna ) is an Austrian surgeon specializing in visceral surgery , former head of the Breast Health Center Vienna and professor of surgical-experimental oncology at the Medical University of Vienna .

Life

Gnant studied medicine in Vienna and Munich, obtained his doctorate in 1988, was habilitated in surgery at the University of Vienna in 2000 and was an associate professor and in 2004 was appointed professor for experimental surgical oncology at the Medical University of Vienna. In 2005 Gnant was elected President of the Austrian Breast and Colorectal Study Group (ABCSG).

From 2014 to 2018 he was head of the University Clinic for Surgery at the Medical University of Vienna. He succeeded Ferdinand Mühlbacher in this function . From 2015 he was Chairman of the Senate of the Medical University of Vienna. In 2017 Gnant was elected to the Austrian Academy of Sciences .

In November 2018 Gnant was dismissed from the AKH on accusation of falsifying OP protocols. He vehemently denies this allegation. In May 2019 an out-of-court settlement was reached, the discharge was withdrawn, but Gnant renounced his position as chairman of the Senate and as a primary school as well as his work as a surgeon at the AKH. He is therefore still a professor at the Medical University of Vienna, on "research leave", which means that he is exclusively devoted to scientific work. On July 1, 2019, he will be succeeded by Walter Klepetko as Head of the University Clinic for Surgery.

Publications

Gnant has authored more than 360 scientific publications and is considered a leading international breast cancer specialist. In 2018 he was one of the 40 most cited scientists in Austria.
