Michael Jäger (* 1958 in Vienna ) is an Austrian editor , amateur astronomer and comet discoverer.

Life

Jäger has worked for the daily newspaper Kurier since 1980 . From 2005 he headed the Lower Austria editorial team, and since 2010 he has been in charge of the entire chronicle.

Since 1982 Jäger has been intensively involved in observing comets . So far (as of January 2015) it was able to record over 500 of these heavenly bodies. On August 28, 1994, Jäger discovered a comet fragment that had separated from comet 141P / Machholz . On October 23, 1998, he discovered comet 290P / Jäger .

Awards

In 1999 Jäger received the Edgar Wilson Award for his comet discovery . In the same year he became the first prize winner to be awarded the VdS medal by the Association of Star Friends . In May 2004 the asteroid (78391) Michaeljäger was named in his honor. On June 24, 2014, he was awarded the Great Decoration of Honor for Services to the State of Lower Austria for his journalistic activities .
