Michael James Genovese

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Michael James Genovese (born April 9, 1919 in Pittsburgh , † October 31, 2006 in West Deer Township, Allegheny County ), was an Italian-American mobster of the US-American Cosa Nostra and about two decades, until his death in 2006, the Boss of the LaRocca family (Pittsburgh crime family) , which operated from its headquarters in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania . Michael Genovese was the first cousin of New York bully Vito Genovese .

Early years

Michael James Genovese was the fifth of Ursula Genovese's six children.

In his early years, Genovese was arrested for robbery and carrying a gun. Car wash was one of his legitimate sources of income. According to a report by the Pennsylvania Crime Commission , Genovese controlled the lottery game throughout western Pennsylvania. Under the leadership of John Sebastian Larocca , Genovese had been the consigliere of the family since 1956 and attended the famous Apalachin meeting with him and Capo (Captain) Gabriel Mannarino in 1957 , which was stormed by the local police. LaRocca escaped federal authorities, and Mannarino and Genovese were briefly arrested. In 1978 LaRocca founded a three-man body, consisting of Genovese, Mannarino and Joseph Pecora , which should lead the day-to-day business. However, Pecora was imprisoned in 1979 and Mannarino died in 1980.

Head of the family

After Pecora's imprisonment and Mannarino's death, Genovese was the sole head of the committee and was henceforth acting boss until LaRocca died of natural causes and Michael James Genovese officially became the new boss of the LaRocca family in 1985. Under his leadership, the family dominated illegal gambling in western Pennsylvania, West Virginia, and eastern Ohio . The family has also been implicated in drug trafficking, loan laundering, fraud and theft in Pittsburgh.

Law enforcement surveillance systems were never able to record incriminating statements from Genovese. He was always careful to go outside to speak to his subordinates. Genovese himself was never charged and remained the official head of the family until he died of natural causes on October 31, 2006 at his home in West Deer Township, Allegheny County.
