Michael Kelly , also O'Kelly or Italianized Signor Ochelli (born December 25, 1762 in Dublin , † October 9, 1826 in Margate ) was an Irish actor , opera singer ( tenor ), composer and theater manager. He worked with Richard Sheridan and was a friend and billiard partner of Mozart . He knew Josef Haydn , Antonio Salieri and Giovanni Paisiello .

Kelly was the son of a Dublin wine merchant. After thorough musical training and stage debut in Dublin, Kelly went to Italy from 1779 to 1783, where he completed his training. In Naples he was allowed to sing at court and witnessed the eruption of Vesuvius from 1779. From 1783 to 1787 he stayed in Vienna and sang at the court theater. In 1786 he played the roles of Basilio and Don Curzio in the premiere of The Marriage of Figaro . He then lived in London and became principal tenor at the Drury Lane Theater .

The main source for his life are the Reminiscences , published in 1826 with the help of Theodore Hook , an entertaining but not always reliable memoir. The book, which was created based on Kelly's notes, contains numerous information about performance instructions by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart.
