Michael Korrel (born February 27, 1994 ) is a Dutch judoka . In 2019 he won a bronze medal at the World Championships.

Athletic career

Michael Korrel fought from 2011 to 2014 in the middleweight division, the weight class up to 90 kilograms. In 2011 he was fifth in the U20 World Championships. In 2012 he was second in the U20 European Championships behind the Russian Khussein Chalmursajew . In the same year he won the Dutch championship against Noël van 't End . In 2013, as in the previous year, Korrel won the silver medal at the U20 European Championships, this time behind the Georgian Beka Ghwiniaschwili . In 2014, Korrel won silver at the U23 European Championships behind Russian Kazbek Zankischiev .

Since 2015, the 1.83 m tall Korrel has been fighting in the light heavyweight division, the weight class up to 100 kilograms. In this weight class, he was the Dutch champion in 2015, 2016 and 2017. At the European Championships in Kazan in 2016 he was defeated in the quarter-finals by the Belgian Toma Nikiforov , with victories over the Irish Benjamin Fletcher and the Austrian Christoph Kronberger, he won a bronze medal. At the 2016 Olympic Games , Henk Grol competed in the light heavyweight division for the Netherlands. In 2017, Korrel won the Grand Slam tournament in Baku. At the 2017 European Championships in Warsaw, he defeated Kazbek Zankischiew in the quarter-finals, but lost in the semifinals to Frenchman Cyrille Maret , in the battle for bronze he was defeated by Russian Kirill Denisov . Four months later at the World Championships in Budapest , he won the quarterfinals against Toma Nikiforov. In the semifinals he lost to the Japanese Aaron Wolf and in the battle for bronze he lost again to Kirill Denisov. At the beginning of 2018, Korrel defeated the South Korean Cho Gu-ham in the final of the Grand Slam tournament in Paris , to whom he lost six months later in the quarter-finals of the 2018 World Championships in Baku, where he finished seventh.

In May 2019, Korrel won the Grand Slam tournament in Baku. In June, he was eliminated in the first round of the European Championships held in Minsk as part of the 2019 European Games against the Belarusian Daniel Mukete . At the 2019 World Championships in Tokyo, Korrel lost to Elmar Gasimov from Azerbaijan in the quarter-finals . In the hope round he defeated the Georgian Warlam Liparteliani , the fight for bronze was won by Korrel against Cho gu-ham.
