Michael Douglas Maidens (born May 7, 1987 in Middlesbrough , † October 19, 2007 in Lazenby ) was an English football player . The Hartlepool United midfielder died in a traffic accident at the age of 20.

Career

Maidens was still part of the Hartlepool United youth team when he traveled to Scotland in pre-season preparation with the professional team. He made his professional debut on September 21, 2004 in a 2-1 defeat in the League Cup against Crystal Palace , and a month later he was used for the first time in Football League One in a 1-0 home win against Port Vale . With the reserve team he won the Durham Challenge Cup this season . In the 2005/06 season Maidens played almost half of Hartlepool's season games and his long-range goal on March 10, 2006 to 2-1 against Huddersfield Town (final score 3-1) was voted "Goal of the Year" by the supporters of the club. Hartlepool just missed relegation at the end of the season and was relegated to Football League Two . Maidens only received his first professional contract in the summer of 2006, but lost his place in the team and was only used sporadically. In order to collect match practice Maidens, who was mainly used on the flanks in midfield and put an offensive style of play on the day, was loaned to the fifth division York City for a month in January 2007 , where he came to three missions. After his return, however, it was still only enough to play in the reserve team. He spent the start of the 2007/08 season on loan from the sixth division Blyth Spartans in Conference North , where he scored the 1-0 winner on his debut.

On October 19, 2007, Maidens was the passenger of a car which, for unknown reasons, hit a metal post near Lazenby. While the driver of the car was only slightly injured, Maidens was dead on the spot. Hartlepool United has not been selling Maidens' shirt with the number 25 since then.
