Michael Meier (journalist)

Michael Meier (* 1955 in Zurich ) is a Swiss journalist , Roman Catholic theologian and specialist journalist for religion, church and society.

Life

Meier grew up in a secular family and studied German and psychology in Zurich to become a journalist. Due to the urgent question for him of God, he studied afterwards in Friborg even Catholic theology . With Adrian Schenker, a specialist in the Old Testament , he attended a conversion course because, as an originally Reformed person, he wanted to change denominations. He completed his third year of studies at the Gregoriana in Rome , but this made him move away from the Catholic Church again.

He has worked as a theological journalist since 1987. First he wrote for the Catholic daily newspaper Neue Zürcher Nachrichten , a year later he started working for the Zurich daily newspaper Tages-Anzeiger . The " Haas case " was on everyone's lips in Switzerland. Meier took over this case and accompanied it as a theological specialist journalistically. This brought him publicity across Switzerland and paved the way for him to become a cultural critic and specialist journalist for religion, church and society.

Honors

Meier received the Herbert Haag Prize for Freedom and Humanity in the Church in 2006 because he was alert, sensitive, broad, independent and critical of religion and the church. Together with five colleagues, he received the Zurich Journalism Prize on May 24, 2011 for his complete journalistic work. The jury justified this with the fact that Meier not only describes facts, but also classifies them and thus contributes to religious education.
