Michael Noble, Baron Glenkinglas

Michael Antony Cristobal Noble, Baron Glenkinglas , PC , (March 19, 1913 - May 15, 1984 ) was a Scottish Tory politician.

Michael Noble was the youngest son of Sir John Noble, 1st Baronet, and the grandson of Sir Andrew Noble, 1st Baronet . He received his education at Eton College and Magdalen College . Then he managed the family estate. He was president of the Scottish Blackface Breeders' Association and the Highland Cattle Society . He was County Councilor of Argyll and a director of Associated Fisheries .

From 1958 to 1974 Noble was a member of parliament for the Argyll constituency until he lost the seat in an election to Iain MacCormick , son of the founder of the Scottish National Party , John MacCormick . From 1960 he was a Scottish Whip and from 1961 Lord of the Treasury . From 1962 to 1964 he was Scotland Minister in the governments of Harold Macmillan and Alec Douglas-Home . In 1970 he returned to government under Edward Heath as President of the Board of Trade and Secretary of Commerce.

In his office as Scotland Minister, Michael Noble oversaw the last execution in Scotland. On August 15, 1963, Henry John Burnett was for the murder of his lover's husband in Craig inches Prison of Aberdeen hanged; The death sentence for the 21-year-old had been passed after 25 minutes of deliberation by the jury, although the question of his culpability was in the room. Noble had previously rejected requests for clemency from the families of the perpetrator and the victim.

On May 3, 1974, Noble was promoted to Life Peer as Baron Glenkinglas of Cairndow in the County of Argyll .
