Michael Sailer (2009)

Michael Sailer (born October 28, 1953 in Nuremberg ) is a German graduate engineer for technical chemistry , a recognized nuclear expert and, among other things, a member of the Scientific & Technical Committee of EURATOM (STC) (2005–2013) and the German Reactor Safety Commission (1999–2014 ), which he headed from 2002 to 2006. He is also one of the most prominent critics of nuclear energy . From 1980 to 2019 he worked at the Öko-Institut e. V. , from 1999 as a member of the management and from 2009 to 2019 as spokesman for the management.

Live and act

Michael Sailer studied technical chemistry at the Technical University of Darmstadt and graduated there in 1982 with a diploma . Since 1975 he has been dealing with questions of nuclear energy and in September 1980 came to the Öko-Institut eV , Darmstadt office. The taz described him as one of the most prominent nuclear critics in Germany. Sailer built up the nuclear technology and plant safety department at the institute, of which he has been head and coordinator ever since. Since 1999 he has been a member of the management of the Öko-Institut and headed the Darmstadt Institute, from 2009 until his retirement in August 2019 he was the management spokesman.

Since 1980, Sailer has mainly worked as an expert and expert in the nuclear field. The main areas of activity were questions of disposal and final disposal , the safety of nuclear facilities , proliferation (proliferation of nuclear weapons) and safeguards as well as questions about nuclear facilities in neighboring countries and in Eastern Europe.

On March 11, 1999, Sailer was appointed a member of the Reactor Safety Commission, which advises the Federal Ministry for the Environment, Nature Conservation and Nuclear Safety . From March 2002 to March 2006 he was the chairman of this commission and thus the highest expert for reactor safety on behalf of the federal government. Until 2014 he was again an ordinary member. He is also the chairman of the Waste Management Commission (ESK), a member of the ESK “Final Storage” committee (all on behalf of the BMU) and the EURATOM Scientific & Technical Committee (STC).

Criticism came from the camp of the opponents of nuclear power when Sailer criticized the blockades of the Castor transports in Ahaus and Gorleben as unsuitable and instead spoke out in favor of nuclear repositories in Germany. Some activists accused him of "being pestered by the nuclear lobby" and called him a defector.

In 2011, Sailer was a guest in episode 14 of the podcast "Without Alternative" on the subject of the Fukushima nuclear disaster .

From 2014 to 2016, as a representative of science, he was a member of the Commission for the Storage of Highly Radioactive Waste (Repository Commission) in accordance with Section 3 of the Site Selection Act .
