Michael Schirmer (* 1944 in Mentin ) is a German biologist and until his retirement in 2009 was Professor in the Department of Biology / Chemistry at the University of Bremen .

Life

Michael Schirmer studied biology and fisheries science at the University of Hamburg from 1966 to 1972 . After receiving his doctorate in 1976, he was a professor in Faculty 2 Biology / Chemistry at the University of Bremen until his retirement in 2009. His fields of work included aquatic ecology and climate impact research . In 1994 he was awarded the Berninghausen Prize for excellent teaching and innovation .

Since 2004 he has been Deichhauptmann (head of the association) of the Bremischer Deichverband on the right bank of the Weser .

Schirmer works on topics of water-related ecology. His working group Aquatic Ecology at the University of Bremen was dissolved in 2006. The spectrum included the classic topics of limnology, as well as nature, biotope and species protection, aquatic ecotoxicology and the assessment and renaturation of waters.

The focus of the research was the consequences of climate change for the landscape, water bodies and society in the area of ​​the Weser estuary and the North Sea coast , the function of fish passages in rivers and the succession in the settlement of new or renatured water bodies.
