history
Suckow was first mentioned in 1328 as Sucowe . The place name of Suckow comes from the Slavic locator suka (dog), i.e. place of the Suk, the Suka , an interpretation as a dog place is also possible.
Suckow and the neighboring town of Drenkow had been divided between Mecklenburg and Brandenburg since the Middle Ages , so that the communities Suckow and Drenkow existed in both the Mecklenburg district of Parchim and the Brandenburg district of Ostprignitz until the 20th century .
With the law on change of borders of the countries took place on 1 July 1950 in the GDR , a land swap between the countries Brandenburg and Mecklenburg . The communities Suckow (Ostprignitz) and Drenkow (Ostprignitz) were reclassified in the Mecklenburg district of Parchim. Together with Drenkow in Mecklenburg, they were incorporated into the Mecklenburg community of Suckow. From 1952 the community Suckow belonged to the Parchim district in the Schwerin district . Suckow has belonged to the state of Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania since 1990 and to the Eldenburg Lübz office since July 1, 2004.
Griebow's Slavic name means mushroom place .
Mentin , a town incorporated into Suckow on January 1, 1951, was first mentioned in a document in 1388. The name comes from the Old Slavic mątŭ for turbidity and means something like place on cloudy water or, based on the locator, place of the męta . The large manor house (manor house, castle) Mentin was built in 1912/13 according to plans by Paul Korff for Rittmeister Arthur Poensgens. The manor house functioned as a children's home in GDR times. The DEFA documentary Heim by Angelika Andrees and Petra Tschörtner from 1978 provides insights into home life .

coat of arms
Blazon : "In gold a torn green linden tree, the trunk covered with a jumping black dog."
The coat of arms and the flag were designed by the Schwerin heraldist Karl-Heinz Steinbruch . It was approved by the Ministry of the Interior on June 20, 2000 and registered under the number 209 of the coat of arms of the state of Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania. |
|
Justification of the coat of arms: In the coat of arms, the linden tree is intended to illustrate the wealth of this tree species in the district. The dog is a reference to an animal figure that plays a role in several traditional Suckower legends, the black dog.
With the merger of the three municipalities of Marnitz, Suckow and Tessenow to form the new municipality of Ruhner Berge, the municipal coat of arms lost its status as a national emblem on January 1, 2019. However, it can still be used by the residents as an identification symbol and as a sign of solidarity with their place. |
flag
The flag was approved by the Ministry of the Interior on March 27, 2003.
The flag consists of two thirds of the length of the flag cloth from a green field and one third, which is evenly striped lengthways with green, yellow, green, yellow, green, yellow and green. In the middle of the green field is the district coat of arms, which takes up two thirds of the height of the flag. The length of the flag is related to the height as 5: 3.
