Wollbacher Church

The Evangelical Church of Wollbach in the district of the same name in Kandern in southern Baden goes back to the 13th century. Parts of this first church are preserved in the masonry of the southern nave wall and the western gable wall.

history

A church in Wollbach ("ellesia Wolpach") is documented in writing for the year 1275; a clergyman ("Wernherus plebanus in Wolpach") is even mentioned in 1215. Excavations in 1978 found the associated foundations, so that statements can even be made about the appearance of this previous building. The rectangular nave with a massive porch was 8 meters wide, 18 meters long and around 5 meters high.

Towards the end of the 14th century, a four-sided choir was added to the east of the nave. The head of Christ on the north wall above the side entrance from a Veronica cloth indicates a sacrament shrine to the late 15th century. The basement of the tower is as old as the choir.

In 1541 the tower, which was originally closed with a gable roof, was demolished. The tower renovation was not completed until 1594, which is reminiscent of a stone slab with the year. In 1649, benches for churchgoers, a pulpit and a baptismal font with Renaissance ornaments were added.

By relocating the north wall to the outside in 1758, two thirds of the tower has stood within the church since then. At the same time, the nave was expanded and the interior of the church was supplemented by a gallery on the north and west walls. Five large windows with segmental arches were added to the south wall. The choir and nave received a painted wooden ceiling. The church is being painted by Johann Jakob Stutz from Liestal . At that time, two frescoes were created on the south wall between the windows depicting the crucifixion and resurrection of Christ.

In 1831 the tower was enlarged by one storey and closed with a pyramid roof . Towards the end of the 19th century, the Wollbach church was thoroughly renovated. A fresco that was considered to be artistically worthless was whitewashed in 1876 and an oil painting was made on the subject of "Christ and Gethsemane". In 1888 the brick altar was moved back and an organ gallery was built under which the sacristy was housed. A pair of Gothic windows was walled up, and the south side received new glazing with colored rosettes . The wooden ceiling was decorated in 1890 with a plaster cast with symbols of faith, love and hope.

In 1955 a provisional renovation was carried out. It was not until the years 1978 to 1980 that extensive repairs and a partial redesign could be carried out. The plaster ceiling was replaced by a wooden ceiling and the two frescoes between the windows were exposed and renewed. In addition to the glazing, the entire altar area was replaced by a new inventory. The pulpit received a new staircase and a new sound cover according to old plans . Since then, the sacristy has also found its place in the tower. On January 27, 1980, the church was returned to its intended use. The cost of this extensive work amounted to almost a million German marks .

description

Church building

The Protestant church stands a little higher in the village center of Wollbach. Until 1828 it was surrounded by a cemetery. The densely enclosed sacred building consists of a nave and two-thirds of the massive four-story bell tower on the east choir wall.

The tower has arched sound arcades on each side on the top two floors, while those on the upper floor - which was added in 1831 - are larger. The tower shaft is covered by a pyramid roof with a tower ball and weather vane on the top. The nave has a gable roof . The sacristy is located in the basement of the tower . In the western corner between the tower and the nave is a small, separated extension covered by a pent roof that is used as a coffin room.

The entrance facade can be reached via a small paved square with an old memorial from 1870/71. Commemorative plaques from both world wars are set into the wall on both sides of the main portal, which tapers to a pointed arch. On the north and south walls there are further epitaphs and tombs from the 17th century. Above the side entrance on the north portal there is a stone sculpture showing a head of Christ with lines nimbus and a sweatcloth. The image from the 15th century originally belonged to the sacrament house.

The hall church is flat roofed. The rectangular, slightly raised altar area is located south of the tower in the choir niche. An L-shaped gallery dominates the nave , the staircase of which is to the left of the main portal. The gallery section above the entrance is equipped with benches, the part lying at right angles to this along the long side carries the organ and has individual seats in several rows to the left and right of it.

The right-hand rows of pews in the nave reach just before the chancel , which extends to the level of the northern side entrance. In the middle of the rectangular open space to the west of the bell tower protruding into the church there is a baptismal font from 1618. It has Renaissance ornaments and was given a bronze edition in 1980 by Joseph Henger from Ravensburg.

The ambo in the chancel has a solid oak panel supported by two equally solid sandstone foot elements . On the table is a modern crucifix made of bronze , six candlesticks and victims boxes, which were also designed by Henger. On the south wall of the front side of the choir there is a wooden pulpit from the 19th century, which was given a sound cover according to original plans during the renovation work in 1980 .

The colorful glass windows come from the artist Valentin Feuerstein . The first window in the nave shows the creation of the world and the fall of man. In the second window, the biblical story continues through Noah's Ark . In the third window, scenes from the life of Moses such as the exodus from Egypt or the handover of the Ten Commandments are depicted. Jesus' Sermon on the Mount is depicted in the south window of the choir . The Gothic window in the choir was also redesigned from flint. It shows Jesus in six different scenes appearing in the same way.

Between the large nave windows on the south wall there are two frescoes from 1759. The murals whitewashed at the end of the 19th century were uncovered during the redesign and renovation in 1978-80. They show the crucifixion and resurrection of Christ. Both pictures are framed by a blue mangle. In the crucifixion on the left, Jerusalem and the three crosses of Golgotha can be seen in the background . In the right picture of the resurrection, Jesus emerges from the grave with a victory flag, the soldiers on guard are frightened by this event.

Bells and organ

Bell tower

In 1595 the Wollbach church received two bells, which were cast by Sebald Hoffmann in Basel.

Today's triple bell is made up as follows:

No. Chime Liturgical function Casting year foundry
1 f sharp ′ Evening, prayer and death bells 1922 Bochum Association
2 cis ′ ′ Our father and time of day bell 1922 Bochum Association
3 e ′ ′ Baptismal bell 1922 Bochum Association

The organ from 1887 by L. Voit & Sons from Durlach originally stood on a gallery in the choir behind the altar. In 1955 it was rebuilt and moved to the west gallery. It received a pneumatic pocket drawer, a pneumatic action , two manuals , a pedal and nine stops . In 1978/79 it was rebuilt by the Peter Vier organ workshop and received an electric action, two manuals, a pedal and twelve stops. Since then it has been located on the north gallery.

Epitaphs and graves

Next to the main entrance there is a memorial on the west wall in honor of the victims of both World Wars and four tombstones: Friedlin Schneider, Vogt († June 3, 1613), Fritz Schneider, Vogt († July 13, 1625 (?)), Martin Sütterlin, Vogt († September 16, 1657) and Friedlin Schneider, Stabhalter († December 21, 1685). On the south wall is the tomb of Matthäus Stöcklin, schoolmaster († August 10, 1664), on the north wall of Hans Greslin, butcher († January 29, 1683) and on the south wall of the bell tower in the choir an epitaph commemorates Pastor Martin Mauritii († February 25, 1667).
