Michael Schulz (theologian)

Michael Schulz (born January 17, 1960 in Wiesbaden ) is a German Catholic theologian .

Life

Michael Schulz was born on January 17th, 1960 in Wiesbaden. The family moved to Mainz , so that Schulz went to school there and in 1978 passed the final examination at the Bischöflichen Willigis-Gymnasium . After finishing school, Schulz studied philosophy and theology at the Johannes Gutenberg University in Mainz and at the Pontifical Gregorian University in Rome from 1978 to 1985 . He lived there in the Germanicum-Hungaricum . In 1985 he finished his studies with a licentiate in dogmatics "Analogy and God Knowledge with Gustav Siewerth". It was on October 8, 1984 in Rome by Cardinal Joachim Meisner for priests ordained .

Following his ordination, he worked for two years as a chaplain in Langen (Hesse) in the parishes of Liebfrauen and St. Albertus Magnus from August 1985 . In August 1987 Michael Schulz became assistant to the house management in the Mainz seminary . There he worked as a moderator in the training for chaplains of the first year of service.

From 1989 he studied at the Ludwig Maximilians University in Munich with the aim of obtaining a doctorate with Professor Gerhard Ludwig Müller , who also comes from the diocese of Mainz and was at the Willigis grammar school. Since 1994 he has worked as a research assistant at the Institute for Dogmatics in Munich.

He achieved the goal of his doctorate in dogmatics in 1995 with his thesis on “Being and Trinity ”, then his habilitation in 2003 with the subject “Historicity of the Fall of Man ”. In 2001 Schulz accepted a visiting professorship for dogmatics at the theological faculty in Lugano and became a full professor there in the 2001 winter semester. From 2002 to 2004 he was a member of the Theological Commission of the Swiss Bishops' Conference .

In 2004 he was appointed Professor of Dogmatics at the Catholic Theological Faculty of the Rheinische Friedrich-Wilhelms-Universität Bonn . In the same year he became a member of the board of directors of the Interdisciplinary Latin America Center in Bonn. In October 2006 he became an employee of Commission IV (Spiritual Professions and Church Services) of the German Bishops' Conference . From 2008 to 2009 Schulz was also Dean of the Catholic Theological Faculty. In June 2009 Schulz was appointed a member of the Commissio Theologica Internationalis ( International Theological Commission ) of the Vatican.

On September 30, 2009, he was suspended as a priest by the Mainz bishop, Cardinal Karl Lehmann , because Schulz says he is "no longer able to live the priestly celibacy".

Michael Schulz has been a member of the Philosophical Faculty at Bonn University since February 2010. He is director of the "Philosophy and Theory of Religions" department and managing director of the Interdisciplinary Latin America Center at the University of Bonn.
