Michael Stern (born December 11, 1897 in Wiener Neustadt , † December 2, 1989 in Vienna ) was an Austrian lawyer.

Life

Michael Stern attended the Bundesgymnasium Babenbergerring in Wiener Neustadt and studied law in Vienna and obtained his doctorate on February 3, 1922. jur. He worked as an authorized signatory at the Bohemian National Bank (?). From 1931 he became an established lawyer in Wiener Neustadt.

In the course of the annexation of Austria to Hitler Germany, Michael Stern was stolen from Michael Stern in Wiener Neustadt by the lawyer and Gestapo leader Friedrich Kranebitter his car, a Steyr 100 . He was expelled from the bar. From December 29, 1938, Stern was one of 30 Jewish lawyers in Vienna who was used as a so-called legal adviser for non-Aryan clients . He was able to save himself and his parents for survival, while all other members of his relatives perished in concentration camps.

From September 28, 1945, Michael Stern was again an official lawyer. He also represented victims of the Nazi regime. He quickly rose to become the Second Republic's leading criminal lawyer. He remained an active lawyer well into his old age, Friedrich Weissensteiner (see literature) shows a photo with a star at a murder trial in the Vienna Regional Court in 1987.

Stern's work for defense lawyers in the courtroom was a valued subject of reporting in the daily newspapers for decades and was often the talk of the day among the population. His diligence was proverbial, was his Stakhanov norm , with a working day from four in the morning to half past six in the evening, even on Saturdays and Sundays, without vacation, for decades. He usually invited journalists to breakfast at 7 a.m. for coffee, sandwiches and a soft egg.

Ifflandring

Michael Stern started the so-called Austrian Ifflandring for defense lawyers . The owner should provide in his will that this will be passed on to the best criminal lawyer of his choice after his death. Michael Stern bequeathed it to Wilhelm Philipp in 1989, and to the current owner Herbert Eichenseder in 1999.
