Michael Weichert

Michael Johannes Weichert (born December 22, 1953 in Neuenbürg ) is a German politician from Alliance 90 / The Greens . From 2004 to 2014 he was a member of the Saxon State Parliament . Most recently, on June 7, 2015, he ran as a candidate from Bündnis 90 / Die Grünen for the district council election in the Erzgebirgskreis.

Life

After completing the Polytechnic Oberschule (POS) after the 10th grade, an apprenticeship with a skilled worker qualification as a gas fitter followed 1970 to 1972 . In 1972 he began to study theology , which he was not allowed to complete.

When the songwriter Wolf Biermann was expatriated in 1976, he and friends became actively involved against the unjust system of GDR socialism. This engagement brought him intensive spying and an arrest by the state security .

From 1974 to 1983 he worked as a gas station attendant and waiter. After an adult qualification with a skilled worker qualification as waiter and restaurant manager, Michael Weichert was self-employed from 1983 to the end of 2002 as an innkeeper at the Leipzig restaurant “Sternhöhe”. In 2003/2004 he was project manager in the management of Bio-City Leipzig.

In 2007 he founded the "WeichertConsult - Ratgeber, Kontakt, Netzwerk", in which he has been increasingly active again as a managing partner since leaving the Saxon state parliament in 2014.

Michael Weichert was a founding member of the New Forum in Leipzig in 1989 , which joined forces with other civil rights movements for the first free elections in the GDR in 1990 to form the (electoral) alliance90. In 1991 it followed in Leipzig and Saxony, in 1993 the union with the Greens at federal level to form Bündnis90 / Die Grünen . 1993–1999 he was the spokesman for the Leipzig district association. In 1994 Weichert was elected to the city council of Leipzig, as well as in 1999, 2004 and 2009. From 1999 to 2005 Weichert was parliamentary group chairman in the city council of Leipzig. After his election to the city council in 2009, he resigned from his mandate in order to concentrate on the work in the state parliament.

In the election for mayor in Leipzig on February 5, 2006, Michael Weichert was the candidate of Alliance 90 / The Greens. He could in the first ballot. unite only 6.1% and did not take part in the second ballot (February 26, 2006).

On June 7, 2015, Michael Weichert ran as district administrator candidate of Bündnis 90 / Die Grünen for the district election in the Erzgebirge district and achieved a result of 4.7 percent. It was the best result that a candidate from Bündnis 90 / Die Grünen in the Erzgebirgskreis had ever achieved.

Parliament

In the state elections in Saxony in 2004 , he was elected to the state parliament over fourth place on the state list.

In 2009 he was re-elected for another legislature (state list, 4th place).

Weichert was deputy parliamentary group chairman from 2004 to 2012.

Since 2004 he is

  • Speaker of his group for economy, tourism, agriculture and consumer protection
  • Chairman of the evaluation committee and member of the committee "Economy, Labor and Transport"
  • Deputy Chairman of the "Railway Parliamentary Group"
  • Deputy member of the “Budget and Finance Committee” and the “Environment and Agriculture” committee.

In 2010 the following tasks were added:

  • June: Vice-President of the "Parliamentary Forum Central and Eastern Europe"
  • October: Vice President of the Saxony Regional Association of the German Youth Hostel Association and election to the study commission “Strategies for a future-oriented technology and innovation policy in the Free State of Saxony”.

In the state elections in 2014 , he missed re-entry into the state parliament on position 16.

Volunteering

In May 1992 Michael Weichert founded the district citizens' association "Möckern-Wahren eV" together with committed citizens and published the district newspaper "Viadukt".

In July 1997, together with friends and companions, he founded the “Association for the Promotion of the City Partnership Leipzig-Travnik eV”, of which he has also been chairman since then. In April 2003 the town twinning was decided by the two city councils and signed on May 2nd by the mayors of Leipzig and Travniks ( Bosnia and Herzegovina ).

Since its inception, the association has carried out various projects in various areas, including: a. Support with the reconstruction of the cinema in Travnik, the design of the “Leipziger Platz”, placement of internships at the Leipziger Verkehrsbetriebe (LVB) for Travnik students. There are also partnerships between the Albert Schweitzer School in Leipzig and the Center for the Disabled in Novi Travnik as well as the Grünau Creative Center and the “Maya” dance studio. At the 9th Open Thuringian Dance Championships 2010 in Erfurt, the dancers from the Grünau creative center and the Maya dance studio performed a joint choreography called “Magic of the Night”. They won first place and the audience award.

There are also numerous projects in the areas of daycare, school, sport, religion, hospital, administration, civil society, art, culture and the utility industry.

Every year there is a citizens' trip to Travnik, usually on Ascension Day .

For his commitment in the central Bosnian city, Michael Weichert was made an honorary citizen of the city of Travnik on May 2, 2008 and was elected Honorary Consul of Bosnia and Herzegovina in June.

On October 10, 2009 the association was awarded the “Citizens' Prize of the European Parliament 2008”.

Michael Weichert has been a member of the Friends and Friends Association of Leipzig Zoo eV (FFV) since 2010. In April 2014 he was elected President of the FFV.
