Michael Weigl (theologian)

Michael Weigl (born January 29, 1963 ) is an Austrian Catholic theologian and associate professor at the University of Vienna .

Life

Michael Weigl attended a modern language grammar school from 1973 to 1981. After graduating from high school in June 1981, he studied Catholic theology from 1981 to 1986 at the University of Vienna , where he graduated Mag. Theol. acquired. In 1986 he worked as a research assistant in the theological courses of the Austrian Bishops' Conference in adult education . From 1987 to 1990 he was contract assistant at the Institute for Old Testament Biblical Studies at the Catholic Theological Faculty of the University of Vienna . Since 1988 he has been lecturer for Old Testament biblical studies at the Catholic Theological Faculty of the University of Vienna. He completed his doctoral studies in Old Testament biblical studies (1986–1991) at the University of Vienna with Georg Braulik in 1991 as Dr. theol. from. From 1990 to 2000 he was a university assistant at the Institute for Old Testament Biblical Studies at the Catholic Theological Faculty of the University of Vienna. From 1990 to 1993 he studied Ancient Semitic Philology and Near Eastern Archeology at the Institute for Oriental Studies of the Faculty of Humanities at the University of Vienna. In 1983 he studied Oriental Studies and Near Eastern Archeology at the Department of Near Eastern Studies at the University of Toronto, where he obtained a Master of Arts degree in June 1993 and was a Research Associate from 1997 to 1998 . After his habilitation (1994–1999) in Old Testament Biblical Studies (University of Vienna) / Old Semitic Philology (University of Toronto) he was awarded the Venia docendi for Old Testament Biblical Studies in December 1999 and he was appointed university lecturer. Since 2000 he has been teaching as an associate professor at the Institute for Old Testament Biblical Studies at the University of Vienna. In July 2000 he taught as a visiting professor at the Faculty of Theology at the University of Pretoria , where he did research as a research fellow . In 2001 he represented the professorship for Old Testament Biblical Studies at the University of Eichstätt , where he was visiting professor for Archeology of Syro-Palestine and Old Testament Biblical Studies in 2002 . From 2003 to 2004 he taught at the University of St. Thomas (Minnesota) as a professor of Old Testament biblical studies. From 2004 to 2008 he was Professor of Old Testament Biblical Studies at the Catholic University of America . From 2008 to 2009 he was professor - Archeology Syro-Palestinienne at the École biblique et archéologique française de Jérusalem . In 2012 he was visiting professor and collaborator at the Center for Textile Research, Danish National Foundation for Research in the Humanities at the University of Copenhagen .

His main research interests are archeology and history of Syro-Palestine, the Old Testament and literatures of the Old Orient and Old Testament wisdom literature. He is fluent in German, English, French, ancient and modern Hebrew, Italian, Spanish, Latin and ancient Greek.
