Michael Werner (born May 24, 1946 in Freiburg im Breisgau ) is a French historian and Germanist.

Life

After studying German, Romance languages and history in Freiburg, Munich and Bonn, he moved to Paris in 1969 and has been French since 1977. There he started a research position at the Center national de la recherche scientifique (CNRS) in 1970 . In 1991 he became professor for the social history of Franco-German cultural relations at the École des Hautes Études en Sciences Sociales (EHESS), where he has since headed the Center de recherches interdisciplinaires sur l'Allemagne.

Together with Michel Espagne , Werner developed the research field on cultural transfer based on the Franco-German example in the mid-1980s , with the help of which a more precise version of the transnational history of relationships should be possible. In 2002, in collaboration with Bénédicte Zimmermann, he presented the draft method of the Histoire croisée ("crossed history", history of interweaving and linking). The Histoire croisée is an approach of multi-perspective and relational historiography that takes up suggestions from the international social science discussion. He is co-editor of the War in History series .

Werner's empirical work has dealt with German emigration in France (including Heinrich Heine , Walter Benjamin ), the history of the disciplines in the humanities and social sciences, and the circulation of cultural practices in music.
