Michael Widom (born October 29, 1958 in Ithaca , New York ) is an American physicist who works in the fields of theoretical solid-state physics and biophysics .

Life

Widom graduated from Cornell University with a bachelor's degree in 1980 and received his Ph.D. from the University of Chicago in 1983 . He worked as a postdoc at Harvard University until 1985 . In 1985 he moved to Carnegie Mellon University in Pittsburgh , where he was first assistant professor, then associate professor and in 1995 full professor. He was also visiting professor in the Department of Computational Biology at the University of Pittsburgh from 2007 to 2016 .

At the University of Chicago he worked in the research group of Leo Kadanoff on the theory of dynamic systems far from thermodynamic equilibrium ( chaos theory ). His main field of work at Carnegie Mellon University is condensed matter physics, and especially solid state physics. Methods of statistical mechanics, quantum mechanics and computer simulation are used to investigate the structure, stability and other properties of novel materials, especially metals in the non-crystalline state. He is particularly interested in quasicrystals . Another area of research is biophysics, specifically the investigation of the structure and properties of capsids .

In 1991 Widom became a research fellow of the Alfred P. Sloan Foundation ( Sloan Research Fellow ). In 1996 he became a Fellow of the American Physical Society and in 2008 of the American Association for the Advancement of Science .

He is the son of the physicist Benjamin Widom and nephew of the mathematician Harold Widom .
