Michail Maratowitsch Fridman
Michail Maratowitsch Fridman (born April 21, 1964 in Lemberg , Ukrainian SSR , today Ukraine ) is a Russian - Israeli oligarch and one of the most influential business leaders in Russia.
Michail Fridman is, together with Pjotr Aven, the main founder of the Alfa Group , one of the largest private industrial and financial groups in Russia. He is chairman of the supervisory board of the Alfa Group and in leading positions in various subsidiaries of the "Alfa Group", for example as chairman of the board of directors of "Alfa-Bank" - and its largest shareholder with 36 percent of the shares -, chairman of the board of directors of the oil subsidiary " TNK- BP ”, member of the board of directors of VimpelCom and of the supervisory board of X5 Retail Group NV
Life
Fridman comes from a Jewish family based in Lviv. His parents emigrated to Germany.
Fridman began his economic career as a student at the Moscow Institute for Steel and Metal Alloys with various jobs, some of which were still illegal in the former Soviet Union, such as window cleaning, running a discotheque and theater ticket business. In the more liberal era under Gorbachev , Fridman, who was employed in a mechanical engineering company at the time, founded cooperatives in various sectors, for example a real estate agency for foreigners, cigarette and perfume imports, a computer store , a laboratory for breeding white mice, a courier service and the company "Alfa Photo". In 1988, two years after graduating, he and other investors founded the “Alfa-Eco Group”, which experienced rapid growth due to its lucrative business areas. The "Alfa-Eco Group" was associated with the Swiss company "ADP Trading" and imported sugar, tea, cigarettes and other goods to Russia. In 1992, Alfa was also licensed to export Russian oil. From this beginning the "Alfa Group" developed.
His partner Pyotr Aven, a fellow student of the later Prime Minister Yegor Timurowitsch Gaidar , was Russian Minister for Foreign Trade at the beginning of the 1990s and then became director of the “Alfa-Bank”. Because of these close relationships with the highest authorities, the Alfa consortium received numerous lucrative contracts. In the Yeltsin era , these relationships were still relatively “second-rate”; since Vladimir Putin took office , they have been “first-rate”. The subsidiaries include the telecommunications company Altimo , which was founded in 2004 as Alfa Telecom.
Fridman's private fortune was estimated by manager magazin (as of 2006) at the equivalent of around 9.7 billion US dollars (5th place among the 100 richest Russians ), according to a rating published in September 2006 by the Polish magazine “ Wprost ” it is an estimated 12.4 Billion dollars. Fridman is accused of being partly responsible for the environmental catastrophe that occurred in November 2002 due to the wreck of the oil tanker " Prestige " on the coast of Spain, which he owned indirectly through an offshore company , although serious technical defects on the ship were found several times, such as after was able to determine the investigative procedure initiated after the disaster, he let it continue. On January 31, 2005, the issue of the government-critical newspaper Kommersant appeared with only four pages and numerous blank spaces. The editors stated in a corner of the newspaper that the issue was exclusively dedicated to Alfa Bank and its boss Michail Fridman, "so that he may like it".
On March 16, 2014, the German energy group RWE announced the agreement with the LetterOne Group, which is controlled by a consortium of investors around Fridman and headquartered in Luxembourg, on the sale of its oil and gas subsidiary RWE Dea for 5.1 billion euros.
Political offices
Fridman is a board member of the Russian Federation of Industrialists and Employers, a member of the Russian Public Chamber (Общественная палата) and the Council on Foreign Relations, as well as Vice-Chairman of the Russian Jewish Congress.
