Mikhail Jakowlewitsch Sjusjumow

Mikhail Jakowlewitsch Sjusjumow ( Russian Михаил Яковлевич Сюзюмов , born November 20, 1893 in Stavropol , † May 1, 1982 in Sverdlovsk ) was a Russian historian.

After attending the grammar school in Stavropol and obtaining the Abitur in 1911, he went to the University of Tartu to study at the Faculty of Philosophy and History. In early 1918 he joined the Red Army and took part in the fighting until 1920.

He then took part in the establishment of the school system in Zlatoust in the south of the Urals . In 1929 he went to Sverdlovsk to take part in building up popular education. He also held classes at the city's high schools. In 1943 he wrote a dissertation on the problem of iconoclasm in Byzantium , which he submitted to the Institute of Education at Sverdlovsk University.

In 1955 he was appointed to head a chair at the University of Sverdlovsk. He specialized in the chapter of early Byzantine history and began to publish a series of publications on the subject, which in 1981 reached volume 18. He was also instrumental in the publication of The History of Byzantium in three volumes, which appeared in Moscow in 1967.
