Mikhail Sergejewitsch Evdokimow ( Russian Михаил Сергеевич Евдокимов , born December 6, 1957 in Stalinsk , Kemerovo Oblast ; † August 7, 2005, 25 km south of Biysk , Altai region ) was an actor and from 2004 governor of the Altai region. On August 7, 2005, he was killed in a car accident under unexplained circumstances.

biography

Shortly after his birth, his family moved with him from Stalinsk to the small village of Verkh-Obskij (Верх-Обский) 15 km southwest of Biysk . After Evdokimow first earned his living as a simple manual worker, he got into the acting business in 1981 and took on numerous supporting roles in Soviet and later Russian films. From 1998 he was the producer of several music albums.

In 2003 Yevdokimov decided to enter politics. He ran as an independent candidate for governor in the Altai region and in April 2004 prevailed against incumbent governor Alexander Surikov . During his tenure, however, he showed a lack of political skills, made many enemies and became increasingly isolated. On March 31, 2005, Evdokimov lost a vote of no confidence with 46 votes to 5 with one abstention. However, despite enormous political pressure from Moscow, he refused to resign from his post.

On August 7, 2005, Yevdokimov and his wife drove the M52 highway from Biysk to Barnaul . They were on their way to Verkh-Shilino to celebrate the 70th birthday of the Soviet cosmonaut German Titov . 25 km south of Biysk there was contact with an oncoming vehicle and Evdokimov's vehicle fell into a ditch. In addition to Evdokimov, the driver and bodyguard died at the scene of the accident, while Evdokimov's wife survived the accident. The driver of the enemy vehicle, Oleg Shcherbinsky, was sentenced to four years in a labor camp for the fatal accident . Upon his appeal, the appeals court overturned the sentence and he was released. The conviction caused considerable resentment among the population, as it is not uncommon in Russia for public officials to grossly disregard elementary traffic regulations. At the same time, however, his death gave rise to conspiracy theories, according to which the death of Evdokimov was deliberately brought about in order to eliminate a politician who had become unpopular, and the Shcherbinsky case, which was presented to the media, was intended to divert the population from the actual accident.

Evdokimov left behind his wife a daughter and another illegitimate daughter.
