Michel Lambert (* 1610 in Champigny-sur-Veude , † June 29, 1696 in Paris ) was a French singer and composer .

Life

His singing abilities were recognized during his time as a choirboy in the chapel of Duke Gaston d'Orléans . Lambert went to Paris, where he was trained as a singer by the king's first valet, Pierre de Nyert (1597–1682), and from 1636 worked himself as a singer and singing teacher. Lambert was under the patronage of influential people, such as the Duke of Orléans and his daughter Mademoiselle de Montpensier, Cardinal Richelieu or the Bishop of Lisieux , and he also moved in the circles of the Marquise de Rambouillet .

In 1640 he married the singer Gabrielle Dupuy. Their daughter became the wife of Jean-Baptiste Lully . After the marriage, Lambert's career was closely linked to that of his sister-in-law, the then famous singer Hilaire Dupuy (1625–1709). From 1656 his reputation as a composer was established, his works appear regularly in the collections of the music publisher Ballard.

From 1661 he succeeded Jean de Cambefort as Maitre de Musique de Chambre du Roi of King Louis XIV. In 1670 he was promoted to Kapellmeister, while his son-in-law Lully was Superintendent of Royal Music. During this period Lambert was entrusted with the training of the pages of the royal chapel and with the management of the trial work for the choristers.
