Michelle O'Neill (* 10. January 1977 in Fermoy , County Cork as Michelle Doris ) is a Northern Irish politician of the party Sinn Fein . Since January 23, 2017, she has been the group leader of Sinn Féin in the Northern Ireland regional parliament, the Northern Ireland Assembly .

biography

Michelle O'Neill came from a prominent family of Irish Republicans and grew up in the village of Clonoe, County Tyrone . Her father Brendan 'Basil' Doris was imprisoned as an IRA activist for a while, her uncle Paul Doris was president of NORAID , an Irish-American organization that mainly supports the Republican movement in Ireland through donations. She received her education at St. Patrick's Academy in Dungannon . After attending school, she began a commercial apprenticeship, which she broke off after the Good Friday Agreement in 1998 in order to devote herself to political work at Sinn Féin. She was elected to the Northern Ireland Assembly in the Mid Ulster constituency in the 2007 , 2011 and 2016 Northern Ireland Assembly elections. From May 9, 2007 to March 25, 2011, she was a member of Parliament's Committee on Education and Vice-Chair of the Committee on Health, Social Services and Public Security. From May 16, 2011 to March 30, 2016, she was Minister for Agriculture and Rural Development in the Northern Irish Regional Government and from May 25, 2016 Minister for Health. As a Minister in 2015, she moved the Ministry's headquarters from Belfast to Ballykelly in County Londonderry .

After Martin McGuinness , the previous group leader of Sinn Féin, declared his retirement from politics in the Belfast parliament for health reasons, Michelle O'Neill was elected as the new group leader on January 23, 2017. On February 10, 2018, Mary Lou McDonald was elected as the new party leader of Sinn Féin and O'Neill as her successor as deputy. In November 2019, O'Neill was confirmed in office, against which regional MP John O'Dowd had run .

Personal

Her marriage to Paddy O'Neill has two children. Her hobbies are "Gaelic sports" ( Gaelic football , hurling ). She is a member of the local Gaelic Athletic Association Clonoe O'Rahillys.
