Michelozzo di Bartolommeo
Michelozzo di Bartolomeo Michelozzi , also Michelozzo di Bartolom (m) eo , called Michelozzo (* 1396 in Florence ; † October 7, 1472 ibid) was an Italian sculptor and architect of the Renaissance .
Life
Michelozzo was the son of an emigrant from Burgundy . He initially worked as an assistant to Lorenzo Ghiberti , then from 1425 to 1438 as a partner with Donatello , until he switched from sculpture to architecture . His patron Cosimo de 'Medici commissioned him in 1444 to build the Palazzo Medici Riccardi . He then built the Villa Medici of Fiesole near Florence between 1458 and 1461 and introduced the Renaissance style outside of Florence. In 1462 he worked in Milan and is said to have designed a palace in Dubrovnik shortly afterwards , but this is not certain as no documents have been preserved. His style was strongly influenced by Filippo Brunelleschi , whose successor he was responsible for the Duomo of Florence for some time. He created numerous other buildings in and out of town.
useful information
- From 1420 he was a student of the sculptor Lorenzo Ghiberti and helped him with the production of the northern bronze doors for the Baptistery of San Giovanni in Florence.
- Together with Donatello he worked on the tomb of the antipope John XXIII. for the Baptistery of San Giovanni.
- Towards the end of his career, he worked for several years in the city-state of Dubrovnik on the city walls there and made a design for the destroyed, medieval Rector's Palace, which was never implemented due to its modernity and high costs. Unfortunately no plans of this draft have yet been found.
- In 1996, the architectural historian Marvin Trachtenberg associated Michelozzo with the planning and execution of the Pazzi Chapel.
