The Michigan Plateau is an ice-covered, undulating high plateau around 50 km in length in Marie-Byrd Land in western Antarctica . It rises up to 3000 m high on the western flank of the Reedy Glacier . The north and east sides are marked by the steep-walled Watson Escarpment . The west and south flanks rise to the level of the central polar plateau .
The area was mapped by the United States Geological Survey and aerial photographs of the United States Navy from 1960 to 1964. The Advisory Committee on Antarctic Names named it in 1967 after the University of Michigan , which had sent numerous scientists for research work in Antarctica .
