Michael James "Mickey" Lill (born August 3, 1936 in Barking , † September 2004 in Johannesburg ) was an English football player . The winger was part of the Wolverhampton Wanderers' championship team in the 1958/59 season and contributed twelve goals to the success.
Athletic career
Lill grew up in east London and learned to play football at the local amateur club Storey Athletic . In 1954 he was drawn to the Wolverhampton Wanderers , who had recently won the English championship . He had to wait until the 1957/58 season for his first team debut. In the 2-1 win against Preston North End he managed a goal on December 7, 1957, but it was his only contribution on the way to the renewed league title of the "Wolves". The following year the Wolves defended the championship and Lill was suddenly a fixture at the end of the season. The agile winger made a total of 18 league appearances (including the last 17 in a row) and scored twelve goals. Even at the beginning of the 1959/60 season he remained part of the team and Lill and his men played the first round of the European championship competition against ASK Vorwärts Berlin . Shortly afterwards he was ordered back on the bench and in February 1960 he moved to first division rivals Everton FC for £ 25,000 .
In Everton's team, which was coached by Johnny Carey , he made his debut on February 20, 1960 against Arsenal (1: 2) and a week later in his home game against Preston North End (4: 0) he scored the first goal for the "Toffees". At the beginning of the 1960/61 season, he scored five goals in four games, but a cartilage damage put him out of action for a long time. Under Carey's successor Billy Bingham , his sporting prospects were bad after his return a year later. Since his knee continued to cause problems, he decided to continue his career below the top division and he joined the second division club Plymouth Argyle in June 1962 . In March 1963 he moved on to Portsmouth FC , where he made 39 league games and scored five goals. He later emigrated to South Africa and there he let his active career end. He died in his adopted home at the age of 68.
