In Microsoft Expression Web is a Web Integrated Development Environment . Marketing was stopped in 2012, and it is no longer available as a download.

Expression Web is the successor to Microsoft FrontPage , but is based on a new code base . It is part of the Microsoft Expression Studio product family . Both a graphical WYSIWYG (What you see is what you get) editor and a source code editor exist. When editing the page in preview mode, it is already displayed as it will later be displayed in the browser. Individual HTML elements can be dragged and positioned on the website; the source code is generated automatically. But there is also the possibility to edit the source code directly, functions such as automatic code completion ( IntelliSense ) for HTML and PHP are supported. The program also offers supporting automatic layouts for formatting CSS elements. With the CSS engine, the result can be seen in the design view. CSS format templates can be tried out on the page using drag & drop and later stored in a central file.

Graphic elements can be seamlessly integrated from programs such as Adobe Photoshop or Microsoft Expression Design .

Technologies

Expression Web allows the development of Internet pages using technologies such as XML , CSS 2.1, ASP.NET 3.5, XHTML , XSLT and JavaScript . As of version 2, Expression Web also has support for PHP development, including an integrated PHP development server. The creation, editing and local preview of PHP pages is supported, among other things by syntax highlighting and IntelliSense. With the included PHP development server, it is also possible to test PHP pages without an external server (e.g. IIS or Apache ).

ASP.NET can also be used to develop a dynamic and interactive web application. ASP.NET offers extensive support for server and user controls without necessarily having to program. Many tools in Expression Web 2 make it easy to insert and configure ASP.NET controls. In addition, you can use the ASP.NET master pages to make changes to the entire page at a central point.

Integration and visualization of complex data from external sources has been simplified with Expression Web 2. XML data can be quickly formatted and visually displayed using drag and drop tools. Complex data queries can also be created with the XPath Expression Builder. XSL Transform (XSLT) enables the data to be displayed in a different form. The integration of web feeds has also become possible with Expression Web 2. The formatting of the data can also be modified during operation.

During development, special attention was paid to supporting the current W3C standards at the time. This is intended to display the websites created in Expression Web correctly on all major browsers. Expression Web is able to generate valid XHTML 1.0 Strict / 1.1, HTML 4.01 and CSS, but not HTML5 .

An access checker is also included to help the developer create accessible websites. With the help of integrated reports it can be ensured that the websites meet handicapped accessible standards for accessibility .

With SuperPreview, Microsoft provides a function to display websites simultaneously in different browsers during development and to display the results on top of one another in order to identify any rendering differences that may exist.
