Microsoft Picture It! is a program for image processing from Microsoft . The development was stopped. The program appeared for the first time with version 1.0 in September 1996. The concept of wizard-supported template generation was adopted by Microsoft Publisher in order to enable the private end user to easily operate basic functions in image processing. The program works with vector and raster graphics . Collages, greeting cards, leaflets, etc. can be created. Form sets and serial letters are also offered. Photos can u. a. Freshen up and retouch. It offers alpha masking and, as the first amateur program, sprite creation . The program has weaknesses when it comes to special effects as well as selection and assembly; a magic wand is completely missing. In 1999, a semi-professional program for business purposes was developed based on this program and marketed as Microsoft PhotoDraw . However, the program did not have any significant success and was discontinued after the second version.

Picture It! uses the ending ".MIX" (Microsoft Image Extension), which is also used by Microsoft PhotoDraw. However, the files are not compatible between the two programs. The Microsoft Word program contains an import filter for these image files. Picture It! became known from 2000 to 2004 primarily as part of the Microsoft Works Suite and was able to achieve a certain market share as part of this OEM marketing.

Successor Digital Image Suite and other successor products

After a reorientation in the graphics area around 2003, Picture It! Significantly revised and marketed as Microsoft Photo Suite or Digital Image Suite (USA) after the home publishing functions were removed and the program was reduced to photo editing. The last version was published in 2006 and development was also discontinued thereafter.

Individual program functions have been integrated into the tools of Microsoft Windows , such as the Windows picture and fax viewer (already in Windows XP ) and the Windows Live Photo Gallery in Windows Vista . The Picture Manager as an Office component is also based on the conversion and format filters of Picture It!
