The Reid Highway is an urban highway in the northern suburbs of Perth in the southeast of the Australian state of Western Australia . It connects Marmion Avenue in the coastal settlement of North Beach with the Roe Highway and the Great Northern Highway in Middle Swan . Together with the Roe Highway, the partially four-lane road forms the outer ring road around Perth as State Road 3 (S3).
The highway has many variable speed limits, but for the longest part of the route the speed is limited to 90 km / h. An 8 km long section, from Erindale Road to Malaga Drive , has been developed as a freeway (with height-free connections). Together with the Tonkin Highway , it serves as an important road link between the northern coastal towns and the suburbs, industrial areas and the airport in east Perth .
history
The Reid Highway was planned as the North Perimeter Highway in the late 1960s . At the beginning of 1986 a short stretch was built between Erindale Road and the then newly extended Mitchell Freeway (S2). In 1989 this section of the route was renamed 'Reid Highway' in honor of the former Governor of Western Australia, Gordon Reid .
The second construction phase, between Mirrabooka Avenue and Alexander Drive - without a connection to the first construction phase - was built in the early 1990s. In the mid-1990s, it was extended eastward to Beechboro Road , which was the connection to the Tonkin Highway (S4), and thus between the northern suburbs and the airport. In 1997, a third construction phase from Erindale Road to Mirrabooka Avenue connected the first two construction phases. Further construction work led the Reid Highway further east to West Swan Road and thus to the existing Middle Swan Road and thus to the Roe Highway (S3).
In 2001, the Reid Highway was extended westward from the Mitchell Freeway to Marmion Avenue (S71) as a four-lane street with a median. This section of the route was very controversial because it leads through the wetland near Carine and the area around Lake Carine , which is considered an important habitat for turtles . Objections to the environment caused delays in construction and a slightly changed route.
There were also objections to the quality and capacity of the highway. The Reid Highway in Westminster (between Wanneroo Road and Mirrabooka Avenue ) has no street lights , which attracted both light-shy rabble and caused a number of accidents. Similar complaints have been raised about the stretch from Beechboro Road to West Swan Road , and the area east of the Mitchell Freeway is prone to traffic jams because the Reid Highway is only developed as a two-lane road here.
A four-lane section from the '' West Swan Road '' to the Great Northern Highway (N95) and Roe Highway (S3) was opened on February 26, 2010 and completed State Road 3 as the ring road around Perth. The extension runs parallel to Middle Swan Road, which was dismantled to the normal local connecting road. This road has a very low standard and is considered a hotspot for accidents.
In 2011, the traffic lights on Alexander Drive and Mirrabooka Avenue were upgraded to free height and bridges were added for the highway. Together with the also height-free connection to Wanneroo Road , an 8 km long stretch of road with freeway standard was created that connects the industrial areas Balcatta and Malaga .
Further expansion
The Royal Automobile Club of Western Australia (RACWA) called for improvements to be continued on the Reid Highway. The connection of Malaga Drive is to be designed without any elevation and the Reid Highway itself is to be expanded to four lanes throughout. However, the state government has yet to approve the further expansion.
Crossings and exits
Reid Highway runs from Marmion Avenue in North Beach to the Great Northern Highway in Middle Swan , where it merges into the Roe Highway. North Beach Road (West) continues the highway west of Marmion Avenue .
Most of the connections to the highway are traffic lights. Exceptions to this are those of Wanneroo Road, Mirrabooka Avenue and Alexander Drive, which are connected without any elevation, as well as North Beach Road , Everingham Road , Duffy Road , Lord Street and Middle Swan Road , which are simple junctions without traffic lights .
